MMDC Facilities

The Macromolecular Materials Discovery Center (MMDC) is a shared user facility that accelerates discovery by providing MII-affiliated students, faculty, and industrial partners access to specialized instrumentation that might be impractical for a single research group or company to purchase on their own.


The Nanoscale Characterization and Fabrication Laboratory (NCFL) was created to provide researchers with the tools to work in converging disciplines at these dimensions. Established in 2007, it is an initiative of the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS) at Virginia Tech. The facility is equipped with more than $10 million in highly specialized equipment, more than half of which was made possible through funding provided by Commonwealth Research Initiative. It seeks to help researchers investigate novel phenomena and build transforming technologies that solve critical challenges.


Measurement of small variations in radio-frequency nuclear magnetic resonances (NMR) leads to the elucidation of covalent structure, stereochemistry (including conformations), and dynamics.

Mass Spectrometry Lab

Mass spectrometry is used to identify substances by molecular weight. Elemental compositions may be confirmed by accurate mass, and the structure and chemical properties of molecules may be elucidated using tandem MS. Detection can be accomplished with minute quantities. When coupled with appropriate separation techniques, MS can identify compounds at low concentrations in complex mixtures.

Chris Williams’ Group / D.R.E.A.M.S.

The Design, Research and Education for Additive Manufacturing Systems (DREAMS) lab is run by Professor Chris Williams. Members of the DREAMS Lab are driven by a vision of the future wherein the layered fabrication techniques of today’s “rapid prototyping” technologies are of a maturity to be considered as viable platforms for the manufacture of end-use artifacts.  Our research mission is to be a leader in the transition of rapid prototyping technologies to the new paradigm of additive manufacturing.
